> An Amish Barn Raising Vol.2
An Amish Barn Raising Vol.2
For many a barn raising is almost synonymous with the word "Amish". In the tradition of caring and helping thy neighbor, Amish men gather for a day of work and socializing to build the bulk of the structure. An Amish family might need a new barn because of fire from arson or lightning or because they are beginning a new farmstead. Friends and neighbors through verbal invitation gather from all around to help. Working together they accomplish what no one family could ever do alone.
Filmed on a beautiful sunny spring day in 2001 but you might feel like you've stepped back 100 years in time.
On this video you will witness: wall by wall skeletal frames being erected, young boys pitching in with carrying lumber to keeping the work area clean of debris, the huge lunch hour where they eat in groups called hitches and eat cafeteria style. You will learn interesting facts about the Amish that will take you up close and into their world of fellowship and community. This is a special day where the women prepare the meals and visit with friends and relatives. It's truly thrilling to watch several hundred Amishmen working side-by-side with their friends and neighbors, accomplishing in a day what would normally take a week or more. This is a fascinating video the whole family will enjoy watching over and over again.
It is the Amish tradition to help one another in times of need. A barn raising is one of those times. An Amish family might need a new barn because of fire from arson or lightning or because they are beginning a new farmstead. Friends and neighbors through verbal invitation gather from all around to help. In early colonial America, a barn raising was commonplace, and the Amish have continued this American tradition.
A barn raising completed in one day is a complex and challenging undertaking. It requires weeks of advance preparation and lots of old fashioned muscles working shoulder to shoulder as a team.
